| | The former posting's quote is from Greg Mortenson: the warrior-man who went into the Himalayas between Pakistan and Afghanistan to build schools and whose story is chronicled in the the popular "Three Cups of Tea". Naomi had a chance to go listen to him lecture and briefly speak with him about public policy. If you get a chance, read the book. If you can't read the book, listen to it on CD. Make some time. If you can't get through it, that's ok I didn't either and I still feel like I benefited from it. If you listen to it you will be changed and who couldn't use a little transformation in their lives?
It has got me thinking about the current crisis in the world. There are dark and barren places in this world where life barely holds on to the land and where all of America's grand ambitions and wealth don't mean a thing. Our country has recently attempted to win over these people with a demonstration of military might and it isn't working. We don't know anything about them and we have disregarded the Power of relationships in influencing them.
Mortenson, a single man who had very little money, has done more for our country's diplomatic place in that Al queda/Taliban ridden country than the feeble, expensive endeavors of the Wealthy George W. Bush because Mortenson attempted to fill a need in the people's lives. The need for education. What a concept!
The lesson I learned from listening to 'Three Cups of Tea' is that peace making is not accomplished at the end of a shot gun. It is accomplished by helping others meet their needs and by building relationships.
